We have just bought a 16.49.2 outback expanda . When booking a caravan site they ask for the length of the van . Do I say it is 16ft or do I measure with the beds folded out ? Do I include the 'A' frame or not ? Would like to know what other expanda owners do .

Its an interesting question as the size does change considerably when you account for the full travel length of van.

I generally give them the model size and in most cases they always come back and ask for the complete size which changes things a fair bit.

But I do find most parks actually account for the drawbar anyway and chuck an extra 5ft on if it sounds to small :)!

We give the setup length and let them know that this includes A frame to end of caravan (24 feet). Hopefully that way there is no confusion on whether it will fit on a particular site. As @expanda has said most will know that if you tell them that it is an expanda or will allow extra. I have seen parks that have "large sites" for big rigs, and a couple that have small sites where length would be an issue. AS long as you are clear what length you are giving them and that it is an expanda all should be good:). Only an issue around busy times when parks are trying to use every site and a site will only fit a 16 foot normal van and you happen to get that one.

Better to make sure they fully understand the 'actual' length when set up. Last thing you want is to be on a site where you cant open a bed, with no spare sites to move to.
I think @Xpandafan has a photo of his/a van on a site where the rear bed couldn't open???

I usually tell the I've got a full height Jayco Expanda 18 and add that it's near on 30' (8.5m+) long when expanded.
Not all CP's know/understand Expanda's like we do and a couple of times I've been offered sites that are far too small. They add 5' to the 18' and put me down as 23' (Nagambie Lakes CP is a very clear exception, they know their Jayco's and Expandas). You'll need at least 24' for your Expanda 16.

Travel length plus another metre or so for rear bed if you have one. Most caravan sites are a standard 9 metres long, I think most people are safe with that!

I thought we were not going to bring that up again! Luckily was only Mrs XF and me on that occasion. Glad you didn't mention the gum tree next to the slide-out and my 7-point reversing effort.:confused-87:

You obviously stay at better class CP's than me, @Burnsy:redface-50: I've had drive thru sites that couldn't fit the 18 and the Pathfinder.
Maybe the way to go is UP.

OUCH!

We always used to let them know we had an expanda with rear fold out bed and let them do the math!
Luckily havent had a problem since and still need to keep my eye on it with the rear ramps!

Thanks to everyone for your help . I will measure the full length when folded out . I know my van was built with an extra long 'A' frame . I will then tell the parks when booking the length from tow ball to rear bed .
