I have a GPS and a laptop running OziExplorer with Hema maps but was wondering what Aussie book of maps people are using, would recommend and why? I am looking to buy one and there seem to be loads.

Have you tried some of the iPad apps? They have some good touring solutions with all the maps per installed. Mud map is one. You pay a bit for them though.

Na Brad I'm not an iPad owner. I am after something without the technology so I can plan. Guess I'm a bit old school, but for the planning I just like to have a map in front of me.

We have Explore Australia 2012. It has main routes in the back but has a little information about each town as well. Was helpful with planning our trip to Vic

is there a Camps 7 due soon, I had heard it was due this comming Feb.

Has anyone used the Hema Navigator with the Camps 6 included? sounds good but pricey! Is it worth the coin?

*Try posting a bit more so your post isn't boring* on that one - we like it so much we update it every 2 years at most (for about the last 16 years or so). You can also just buy the maps section without all the town/touring info (amongst other 'Expolore Australia' books). However, it is a big book, and not always something you just whip out while driving, so I usually carry a spiral bound Hema Handy Atlas already open to the area we are driving that day.

Lastly, we usually carry one of the Gregories Towns and Cities directories for whichever state we are in , which give the streets in many country towns.

We do use a gps, but I still find paper maps better for planning ahead and knowing where we will be going before relying the technology. They still have a tendency to take us on odd little routes somewhere - even in the Gold Coast in June, we were trying to find the caravan park in the dark and the gps took us through winding suburban streets, rather than just the two major roads we could've used, cos I didn't look up where we were going. Our whiz bang Navamn 'made-for-caravaning' model tells us to exit at every freeway exit to only get straight back on again (Tom Tom did the same too)

I use Camps 6 POI file on my gps in the car.

For those who have not used a POI it stands for Point Of Interest and is basically Camps 6 but in a format your GPS can read.

It works on most common GPS devices so you can -

1) Search for campgrounds around you
2) Set a destination to a campground in a location

Or similiar....

I also load the POI file in Google Earth on my desktop / laptop and it allows me to find / locate parks and trip plan prior to leaving!!!!

I do also have a large hard copy so the navigator can look at photos on the road as even the best laid plans on the laptop / desktop at home can fail!

Hey Jas
I haven't heard if version 7 is coming in Feb or not, however, most of the previous versions were released in February 2 years apart. Going on this, 7 is due in Feb 2013. Wait and see.

We currently use camps 6. Great book.

Hi Ants,
Suspected as such, yep watch and wait I guess. We are looking to do a free camping trip in March/April though northern NSW so will wait as long as we can before buying Camps?.
Have heard plenty of compliments about the Camps 6.

Camps 6 book and an old fashion road atlas, cant remember the name, we also use in dash GPS running aussie explorer but i dont use it much as the screen is too small to use it properly.
I will at some point get the large screen VMS, have a mate with one and im impressed with it, i also have a mate with maps on his i pad which sits in a windscreen mount, big view size but i dont know much about the map quality, he runs a tom tom app i think, he is an interstate removalist and says its great to use

For normal road use we use the Tom Tom app on the iPhone and it is fantastic.
On the iPad I think there is a couple but mud maps is one I have seen that seems good. Costs a bit though.

Camps 6 for us also.

We like to know the way before committing to tech alone. Had theTomTom, Google Maps and NavFree all provide different routes to the same location - some where sight-seeing circuits of blocks, others down lanes and long ways around.
