As some of you are aware, there has been issues with obstructed number plates on vans with factory fitted bike racks
In NSW at least you can not get trailer rego's on bike rack plates.
I got chatting with a neighbouring vanner on the weekend when I noted his tow vehicle rego was displayed on the bike rake plate on the rear of his van.

As he was setting off on his lap of block in January (lucky bugger) he was informed by RTA/RMS or whatever they call themselves now, that if the trailer plate is obstructed the tow vehicle's rego must be display on the bike rack plate,

So for those with the issue of obstructed plates due to bike rakes etc, something to consider.

So what your saying is if we contact RTA and tell them our number plate is obstructed by the bike rack they will issue us a special plate?

You need to order them and there is a fee (I think they used to be around $30 several years ago). They are called auxiliary plates. You'd also have to prove you're the registered owner of the plates you're copying. You can order at myplates.com.au but none of their sites work on my phone so I can't look up the details...

I guess of coarse always best to make your own enquiries, as I'm just going on what he told me and what I saw.
Looking at the RMS site I couldn't find anything relating to bike rack plates on trailers, only cars which also stated if your lights are obstructed by the bikes etc, you must have auxiliary lights fitted. :noidea:

Bike plates are on the myplates.com but like you sat I will have to check to see if they make them for the van and not just the car!

cheers!

Just tried the myplates.com.au and I entered details and I get the message "An auxillary plate cannot be ordered for a Trailer".

Oh well!

No! You cant get them for trailer rego, but this bloke had the tow vehicle rego displayed on the van on bike rake plate, naturally the van must have its own plate attached as well.
