Bike Carriers

We were camping in Tocumwal at town beach and got chatting to another couple. During that discussion, they mentioned hearing of difficulties with bike carriers on vans in WA.

They have been told that in WA it is illegal to carry bikes on the rear wall of a van. We have, like many others, a Thule carrier that was put on the wall at build. It isn't fixed to the rear bumper.

Any WA chaps or chapesses know what the rules are?

First I have heard of it but not to say he was correct!
The only issue I have heard someone getting done for was due to the bikes hiding his number plate...

We ordered ours with bike racks on the back, need a step ladder to put them on so no chance of impeding vision of number plate to assist with increasing the states revenue....................plenty of caravans/campers do it over here & about the same amount of caravans/campers have obscured plates as vehicles that fit bike racks on the back - actually saw my first WA ancillary number plate on a vehicle with bikes on the back the other day............

Bikes obscure our van number plate, had enlightening conversation with RMS, (Roads and Maritime Service, NSW) yesterday, we are unable to get an Auxillary plate for van , but he explained that you get one for the tow vehicle, and display that on van, interesting to see if that is legal in other states. Oh for national standards.

I could understand this if the police have an issue with 'car bike racks' mounted on the rear bumper of a van. Those bounce all over the place and they aren't suitable for mounting on a trailer or van........or so our dealer and another two have told me. Also have one of those type of racks for the car, and it also says that they aren't to be fitted to vans.

I got an ancilliary plate last week. $25 and don't have to worry about fine anymore.
