Hi all, just wondering with the expandas getting much bigger in size and breaking the 25 foot travelling length how are people finding getting these onto sites at van parks?

Specifically I am talking about van parks that suit these size vans with slabs etc?

We had a 25ft Sterling and getting onto sites was a PITA, one of the reasons we sold it, it became too hard to be bothered going away. Towing length on that was just over 30ft though.

Noticed a few parks downsized their sites in with the general trend away from big vans a while back. Expandas are helping reverse the smaller van trend.
Along with smaller sites, I've noticed a few with sloping sites (great for drainage but not much else) and some insane placement of utilities, fences, posts, etc. sometimes wonder if owners/managers have ever had a van. The increased popularity of free camping probably owes at least something to the dodgy sites some CP's are offering. Instead of ranting about free camping the CP's need to take a good hard look at themselves IMHO.
A bit of pre-planning helps find those CP's with good access or reasonable drive-through sites. Still reckon Nagambie Lakes sets a bit of a benchmark in Expanda friendly spots here in Victoria. Large, level, well grassed and drained.

We went to a park the other week which had drive through sites. Very handy...EXCEPT. The water connection was very far away in a garden which meant running the hose around the slab rather taut. Difficult to keep the kids from tripping over it. And no sullage. We paid over $70 a night in a 4 Star park and no sullage... WTF??? We just drained into the garden nearby. We were also close to amenities so we didn't shower in the Expanda.

I find now that I always tell them my van is a 20ft Expanda and we always seem to end up on big sites. One thing that does annoy me though is people who sit under their awnings and watch you try to reverse your van in and won't even offer to move their car you are trying to get around! Had this happen a few months back and they ended up leaving before us, so went to help the guy hitch up and made a snide comment about how people park! Got a funny look at the end of it!

When in Moree back in October got talking to manager on duty at Mehi CP, they and taken the opposite approach, by reducing number of sites by opening them all into drive-thru, they were huge. They had a few that weren't but still had reasonable access and under cover.
Opal CP in Lightning Ridge is "ALL" drive-thru.

At the Dubbo Big4 last week, i had an ensuite site which was that small i couldnt pull the awning out! And didnt have enough room to park my work ute (V8 Cruiser) on my site. It wasnt great, but other than that, and being a PITA to back into at 10pm with no spotter, it was good. That had some beautiful drive through sites down near the river, should have got one of those..
