When we were at Port Vincent the other week, I noticed a couple of vans with straps that went from the ground up and over the whole length of the roll out awning an then back into the ground, I presume this is to hold it down in the wind.

Has anyone else seen these and if so where would you buy one?

They also stop the flap. I find you are better off with a set of de-flappers from a caravan yard and put a guy rope over the awning roller to the ground.

Anyone got a pic of one in use ?

Just wondering if could be used on free standing gazebos to stop them taking off in the wind !

Hi Janbo,

We use the Clarrie's Awning clips, available online and from eBay for around $22/pair, then you just use normal guy ropes, pegs and springs. The awning clips lock into the track used for the annex at the end of the drum and are made from marine grade stainless steel.

Hi there Dave, thanks for that, I was wondering if they will work with the pop top because the material seems higher ?

I use the deflapper arms and choke a guy rope around the roller. Loop on one end of the rope, spring on the other , pass the rope around the roller, feed the spring through the loop and peg down.

Thanks, do you tend to use the awning with the legs detached or like in the picture!!

Hi Janbo, Yep they'll work with pop-tops our freinds have a pop-top and use them.

Both, legs up and legs down, just for piece of mind.

Cracka's idea with choking the rope is just as good also and doesn't cost much.

This is the same setup I had.

But I had mine further up the awning slightly.

Only problem I had was the pegs in the ground hurt when you hit them with no shoes.

IMO just get a good set of deflappers they are the best thing I have ever bought and worth every penny.

Hey expanda,

wouldn't you still have to tie the awning down even with d-flappers on? I would've thought it would still fly back over the van.

We put the legs down, then peg them into the ground - in everyone's experience, is that enough in a decent wind or should we be chucking a rope over the roller as well?

Always pegged the legs and used guy ropes on ours. Haven't really had experience with really bad winds though. The only time we did have bad winds was about 3 years ago when a cyclone was heading our way so we packed all chairs etc in the landcruiser and rolled the annexe up for the night.
