Arkaringa Station is in the heart of the Painted Desert which makes it a perfect place to set up camp for some exploring.
It cost $20 (in 2010) a night for an unpowered spot which includes showers and toilets, fires are also allowed but bring your own wood. You need to have your own drinking water as the water onsite is bore water.

There is an undercover cooking area with tables and benches to use.

The Painted Desert is 150kms north of Coober Pedy, 100kms east of Cadney Park and 90kms south west of Oodnadatta.
Head to the homestead if you are planning to camp or enquire about accommodation. The homestead is 11kms from The Painted Desert. We accessed the homestead via the Painted Desert from Oodnadatta. There is some soft sections to travel through as some of the track is along creek beds but this didn't pose a problem on our visit to the area (2010).

Access to here is via gravel roads so it is a must to be prepared for travelling in this area and being self sufficent is a must with plenty of water. Your van and vehicle must be mechanically sound with and spare parts and tools should be carried if required like any outback areas. Track conditions will need to be checked also as these roads can be impassable after rain and can be closed at anytime when this occurs. Don't let this put you off though as the area is absolutely awesome with the Painted Desert spectactular.
