Heading towards Arkaroola later this year and am intrigued by continuing along this track. Does your 4x4 needed to be kitted out with recovery gear? Is it kid and family safe? Is it for more seasoned 4x4 experts?

I did it last year traveling south from Inaminka down to Arkaroola on my adventure bike with 7 others, fuel range was our biggest concern with a distance of 460kms, they where doing quite a bit of road works along the whole length, another problem was the gravel ruts on the southern end formed from the semi's and road trains heading up to the moomba gas fields, clearance will be the main issue with the van and tow vehicle as the ruts where quite deep and changing lanes almost impossible on the bikes, where are you heading once you get to Inaminka.

We went via Inaminka and to Birdsville after the Cameron Corner meet a couple of years ago, the Strez was out of action due to recent flooding, best ask for local advise at the time. Having said that we had no real problem on the Cordilla Downs track except it was rough as guts so make sure everthing under is protected and take it easy, great trip

The track is basically just a dirt road BUT if it hasn't been maintained for a while you will encounter all the scenarios described above. I would carry recovery gear and you never know what situation might present itself. This is us in 2010. We camped at Montecollina Bore about half way along the track for a night but overnight rain changed things in a big way. This photo is us trying to get out and head south. We were in the Prado and not towing but others in our party were towing and all of us had issues of one sort or another. It took an hour to travel 1km. We found a road train on the side of the road parked up and the driver told us the track was closed so that it turned into a 4 night stay. Turned out the best and most memorable part of the trip.

As said, conditions can change very quickly so you'd definately need recovery gear.

  • And a well prepared 4wd
  • And a good radio or sat phone
  • And a very very well prepared van as light in weight as possible
  • And sufficient fuel
  • And maybe sufficient water
  • And travel with another person or group
As for kid and family friendly, it again depends on the kids ....if they like adventure and are prepared to rough it, then fine. If they want to be constantly entertained it may not be for them but the road itself will provide the entertainment!

If you're happy and confident, do it. If not, I'd be wary.
