The van has a small light over the kitchen bench area and every now and then, the globe cover needed to be removed to clean out what I initially thought were dead insects. On closer inspection, it turns out ants have made a nest in the panel above the bench. Removed the light fitting and sprayed with an ant spray. Stirred them up and made them groggy but didn't seem to kill them off. Will go looking for a stronger anticide tomorrow. Couple of photos of the panel (light removed) showing where they have been nesting. Third photo is of the ants collected before I taped up the hole for the night.

we had an ant infestation last time we stayed at Maroochydore CP, the little blighters came up the electrical lead and the water hose and we only noticed where they came from when we were packing up, only the small little black ants, on further inspection at the park they were everywhere. I got some dead ant and put a few drops everywhere and repeated this for a couple of weeks after we were home, eventually got rid of them but it took a while. Be careful as well as sometimes it means there is moisture from a leak!!!!

I usually carry "Ant-rid" and "Ant-ex" both David Grey products - from the green shed
"Antex" is granulated and "Ant-rid" is powder........

the powder goes on everything that touches the ground - legs, hoses anything

the granuals go on any near by nests...................

fingers crosses, touch wood - no ants yet.....................

The ants weren't 'bitey' when I was flicking them into the bucket. Best I can tell from surfing the net is that they are a type of sugar ant (about 10mm long). Have sprayed again today but no live ants were apparent. Will continue to monitor. Thanks for the advice about the ant rid and ant-ex. Hadn't thought about moisture due to location of ants but will do a more thorough inspection for any leaks (internal and external).

I will be trying some of these http://www.bunnings.com.au/combat-1-5g-ant-rid-bait-6-pack_p2961007 as we have a problem with tiny little brown ants coming out of the walls

Yeah wife uses those too. They work when you have a few ants homing in on something but not when you have a full infestation. First time the little "truckers" got in to our curtain tubes and invaded we called a pest exterminator. He used these http://www.easypestsupplies.com.au/ant-bait-stations.html
And tracked their trail to outside and planted professional ant rid along their tracks. It worked and since then we just do the same rather than part with a few hundred dollars.

Note the antrid product loses it potency with UV so when baiting outside cover it up with something. Also being sweet to atract ants it's also appealing to overweight cattle dogs and probably other canine friends!
