Hi All,

Thought I would drop in and say an official hello... Hello!

I've been lurking around a little bit recently as we have recently purchased a 2012 Expanda 16.49-1 Outback. Here's the story..

We were planning a trip to Uluru and Kings Canyon in June with our existing van, however decided to look at upgrading prior to the trip if something came up. The local Jayco dealer didn't seem too keen on doing a deal on a new van and certainly wasn't interested in trading our second hand van (based on their valuation).

We found a 2012 Outback for sale and went to check it out. That afternoon we suddenly had two vans, the Expanda and the old van! We felt the deal on the Expanda was great, the quality of it was excellent so it all happened. It has also worked out well as we sold the old Van pretty quickly privately (for more than double the Jayco dealer offer).

That was all about 5 weeks ago, and after a short trip away to test everything in the new van we head off to Uluru (from Victoria) in a couple of weeks.

I'll also be well in the minority with the tow vehicle, we weren't particularly looking for an Outback, but as I said, the deal was good so that's what we went with. I'm towing it with a VF Calais-V. The Calais towed the older van really well and has so far done a great job with the Expanda. They are an impressive bit of gear. The only issue we had was with the tow height as the hitch on the car isn't adjustable, so we have altered the hitch height on the van a little and now all sits nice and level.

We are really looking forward to the trip, looking for chatting to you all down the track...

Welcome @Ash and looks like a good find. You'll find plenty of info and tips on here if needed. But beware there are members that enjoy helping you spend your hard earned on modifications ;)

If the Calais is a V8 you will have no issues. We have a VE SS Sportswagon and it pulled our previous 16.49.3 tourer as if it wasn't behind it. I reckon it would also tow the the newer 17.56.2 Outback no probs but not legally!

Looking forward to seeing pics and reports of your Uluru trip.

Enjoy the forum.

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi @Soaring, yes I imagine that we might standout a little, make sure you come and say hi if you spot us. We'll be at Ayres and Kings Creek station from mid June, also with a house full of women!

Thanks @dagree I'm well aware of the ways that the money can be filtered from the wallet. I've already done a couple of things (stereo, led lights), and have a nifty idea for the sullage hose holder on the way (that I might share, pending on success or otherwise!)
