After planning our trip around Australia for 18 months we have finally hit the road bar a few interruptions.
None of which could be helped when you have an unwell family member but they're back up and running and so we have finally left.
We departed from Ocean Grove on Wednesday 28th January and then made a stop off at a friends near Terang to help build us a rear bike rack for the van. Had a lot of fun and the boys came up with a great option for us and it works a treat.
Moved on from there on the Saturday and drove through Warnambool and continued on looking for a suitable first stop. The plan was to stop near Portland at maybe Fitzroy River but it was a bit busy with a lot of young ones being a Saturday night besides we were all so excited that we just kept driving and ended up at the free camp at Dartmoor by the river. We only were staying a night so set up a quick BBQ, played a little cricket and went to bed with movie.
Next day we set off for Nelson to have a look around, by the time we arrived at around 11am it was pushing 40 degrees Phew. We called in and had a look at a few beaches and then decided to have a swim to all cool off at the rivers mouth. Beautiful spot and would have stayed but we were after a free camp and there was only one just out of town but after arriving there we found it to be too busy.
It's the local boat ramp so of course was very busy on such a hot day. One of the old locals showed hubby and my 10 year old around his boat house and we spent the afternoon swimming there to cool off.
Once back on the road we headed to Mount Gambier to check out the Blue lakes. Wowee the color is so vivid it's just amazing. Beautiful views but still very hot now at about 44 degrees so back in the car and we headed to South End which is west of Millicent on the beach. Needed some sea breeze to cool us down.
Found a great little camp behind a sand dune right on the beach at $8 per person per night. Only a couple of other campers and very spacious so we all had loads of room. Set up camp and stayed for 4 days. Stunning beaches and nice and quiet.
Headed into Beachport for a look around. They have some great things to see and do one being their claim to fame, the second longest jetty in SA at 772 metres and The Pool of Siloam which is seven times saltier than the ocean. Lyndon and Saxon stripped off straight away to experience it's so called 'special power' and extra buoyancy. It apparently had both according to the boys.
We have since left there and have now been camped at Wrights Bay which is half way between Robe and Kingston on the point for 8 days. Great camp spot and only $3 per person per night and kids under 16 free!!!!
Supposed to be great fishing also but the fisherman say it's the quietest it's ever been around here in years so not much on the bite.
Heading to Naracoorte tomorrow to check out the caves and then keep moving on on Saturday.
Not quite sure where to next but have booked into a Caravan park at Goolwa just so we can give everything a wash and charge up ready for the next stint.
We are loving it on the road except some school days are a bit hard to handle when the suns out and we would all rather be anywhere else but with our heads in a txt book. Trying to mix it up abit and we'll change things as we go I'm sure.
Have met some lovely people already and can't wait to meet more.
Looking forward to the road ahead
Cheers
