More correctly, it wasn't working for a while and I'm not sure for how long.
Prior to trying to take the van for a long trip 6 weeks ago (which didn't happen) I was testing everything out and noticed that the green LED's on the unit mounted to the "A" frame would not come on at all. Fruitless testing of power and earthing didn't discover the reason. In crawling underneath the van and trying to trace cables I found a connector the was just visible in amongst a collection of others underneath a sheet metal covering. I removed the cover and reconnected it and all was well. One side of the cable went to the rear to the ESC module but the other disappeared up in side the front of the van. There were only 2 items in that area, the water heater and the Brakesafe module. The ESC was factory fitted during the vans construction so it seems that Jayco have the Brakesafe and ESC systems wired in series. Seems logical but I can't find anything so far from AL-KO in their documentation that would confirm it being wired that way. Regardless, I cable tied the connector together so it hopefully won't come apart again but it couldn't have been put together very well in the first place.
We had become used to checking that the LED's went to green after every stop as we were disconnecting the car and van connectors (2 Anderson plugs and the 12 pin connector). This was due to getting a flat car main battery very early in the trip and not knowing what caused it we started isolating it all at each stop, even for fuel. We didn't get another flat battery for the rest of the trip home from South. Because of this I guess it happened between the last stop and home and that was only about 120 km (all bitumen) as they had gone green during the morning check.
Moral of the story? If you have ESC then very frequently check that the 2 LED's are going to green.
Far right connector is the one concerned.
