35C and no aircon

We're heading off on our first trip in our new 17.56.2 and the weather forecast is daytime temperatures between 30 and 35C and winds 25-40 km/hr. As we live in Tassie, we decided against getting an air conditioner installed and now I think we're going to regret it. We're not used to hot weather down here and we don't cope too well in temperatures above 30C!

Any idea how hot we can expect it to get inside the van during the day? I imagine we'll be set up in full sun. Our toddler still naps during the day so wondering if there is any hope of her being able to sleep in the van...

If you're getting 25/40 km/winds, hopefully the breeze is pleasant enough. We camped in similar temperates once on an unpowered site and our 2 year old still has a nap as well. We put him on the shady bed end opened the canvas up completely and he was pretty cool. Slept fine for 2 hours. Open the van as much as you can.... all bed ends, pop tops, window etc and try and get some cross airflow happening..... Good luck! If you have power, maybe add a fan to help circulate the air. Fingers crossed you get some shade on your site too.

I would add to the above, having just been in in 37 plus, would be to put the van in the shade if possible and also close and shade the side the sun is hitting. Privacy screens on the bed ends if you have them and as said above all the windows and try to catch a breeze. The vans are not too bad actually and in those temps it saves on hot water as it comes from the tanks hot.

Agree with all points above. We camped last week in 30 degrees with a breeze. The van was very cool, I find it does not heat up too much.

Good luck with the Toddler. Back in our tenting days we would put the kids to sleep in a pram/stroller and park them under a tree.

We find our toddler sleeps extremely well up her end of the van. With the windows opened she gets the warmth of the canvas but a nice breeze coming through.

Thanks everyone. I rang today to see if there were any shady sites available and apparently they are all in full sun. Thanks for the tips, will try and set up with the awning on the sunny side. I was thinking the same thing relgate, if we get desperate the pram under a tree might be the way to go. At least it should cool down overnight, one advantage that Tassie usually has!

I bought a 12 volt fan from Supercheap for around 30 box. It plugs into my internal 12 volt plugs. Great for unpowered sites on very hot nights.

Get yourselves a good fan 240 or 12 volt. Makes a big difference if you have no Air Con. Also when air con needs to be turned off at night fan still goes quietly.

We use a box fan in the camper trailer and works well in moving air. Also no assembly and packs well. Just moving the can make a difference.

Megs I take it back!!
We just went through the 40 degree day here in Vic.
The air conditioner kept it cool, but without an a/c on a day like that plus a baby, my suggestion is to find a cool tree to sit under, pool, beach shopping center, whatever is the coolest place to be.
We had a van beside us with a baby and they left in the morning somewhere and I did not even see them back till the next morning.

Well it was even hotter in the end! 41C!! Inside the van got to38C, uncomfortably hot. It was gusty also, but horrid hot wind so it didn't cool us down at all. We spent a fair bit of the day swimming in the cold river, our saviour. We managed to get our toddler asleep in the pram for a short time, but even in the shade she woke up very sweaty and hot. That night was also very hot, but finally cooled down around 11pm.

The van went well. Didn't find too many issues, although the awning is not installed correctly and as a result has already started to rip a little. It is not installed centrally on the roller and this has made it pull diagonally when rolled out. It also means we can't use the anti-flap bars as on one side there is a huge gap and the other side the awning is too close to the bar. So that. Means we cant put up the annexe either. We only had the awning up on day as we didn't dare have it up in the slightest of breezes in case it ripped further.

Also found that there is a big gap at the top of the toilet/shower door that I had already pointed out to be fixed when we collected the van. It's due to the wall with the door hinge on it being warped towards the top. But I noticed when the temperatures were hot the gap grew considerably (to the extent that you had to lock the door just to keep it shut) and when it cooled down the gap lessened although still there.

We weren't near any of the bush fires thankfully. In a weeks time we are meant to be taking the expanda down to Port Arthur, but not sure if that will happen. The road to the Tasman Peninsula is closed and has been since Friday due to the still-raging fires and I believe there is no power on the peninsula at all. It may be a week or more untul power is restored as many power poles have been burnt down. People are being rescued by boat off beaches. I'm very glad we didn't head there to this trip or to the other affected areas. I really feel for all those that have lost property due to the fires, including my husbands relatives. Awful.

In our old camper trailer we used to use the Coleman Zephyr fans. Used two one to push air one to pull. We have twins who still have a day sleep.

Worked pretty well and run on D cell batteries. They are a magnetic setup and grip onto the mesh on your windows.
