Hi all,

I'm after some feedback from 200series owners about the vehicles performance and handling after going up in tyre size from the standard 285/65R17 to a 70R17. Is the change really noticeable and how do they go when towing, do you still have plenty in reserve for hills and overtaking?

Thanks.

I can't comment on the different per se - they were swapped the day after I got the car.
But certainly no problems having the 70s on. The handling is acceptable and the engine has enough grunt to overcome anything... :)
Really its only 25mm dia difference so not anything too far over the top.
I think the tyre type might make more a noticeable difference - say going to muddies from the stock road tyres? (mine are Bridgestone D697 ATs)

Not 200LC related (Unfortunately) but I fitted 70's on the Prado instead of 65's and found no noticeable difference when driving or towing.
The only thing to watch for is the accuracy of the speedo. Larger diameter will register a slower speed. GPS vs Speedo showed a difference of 4k/hr at 100k's on ours!

When we had the Hilux went up one size and lost a fair bit of power so when changing the tyres on the 200LC went for KO2 265/70 so kept the same rolling diameter.

Now done 30k on them and been great, no extra fuel use and locks up torque converter like normal .

I went up a size from original ATs for the first 50k. Not so much it knocks the edge of performance as @straydingo says it's got plenty it's just a pain as it's harder to get it to jump to 6th and your consumption suffers (if your a worrier of consumption ?)

thanks for the reminder - I meant to mention that last night and forgot. My speedo is now spot on, not one km/h under or over.

But then we don't buy LCs (or caravans) and worry about consumption do we?;);)

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm not too concerned about fuel usage it's more performance than anything. I do find it to be a little annoying to get it in 6th gear, I nearly have to back right off to almost coasting before it drops in.

I fitted the exhaust about 5k before fitting the bigger tyres. It was a shame cause the exhaust definetly got it dropping to 6th quicker but once the muddies went on I lost the advantage. That said I'd fit the nittos again at this stage for my usage they are great.
