Well that time has come where the 16.67-1 OB is to small and we really want a shower and toilet, plus no pop top.

So after much procrastinating for the past 18 months, here we are. Have signed papers to trade in the 16 footer and get the 20.64-1 Outback. We are planning a 5 week WA trip in Jan 2017 so that has spurred us along, plus we have no 2 kid due in 5 weeks, so the who shower thing is a great.

After some research on here have quite a few extras so here we go.

Something big , lots of space

20.64-1 Outback

Extended drawbar (will mount a box with gennie and Baby Q)
External shower (wash kids if needed before showing them in the shower)
2 x 150w solar (for the fridge)
2 way Waeco fridge (compressor), I really dislike the 3 way fridge and the time to get cool, compressor style just work.
Drifter (to control the fridge consumption etc)
Grey water tank
Picnic table
TV , aerial etc
2nd battery
Shelves in cupboard

Jayco Newcastle came through with a great deal, and are even driving to Sydney this week to collect my 16.67-1. Delivery will be Nov 2016.

Hi Swerve,

Congrats on the new van.

We are first timers and decided to finally get our first van after a couple of years procrastinating. We are a young family with 4 girls under the age of 6 and we ordered the same van and collected it 2 weeks ago from Watsons Port Macquarie. Excellent service there by the way.

I can not fault this van in anyway, it is perfect for our size family and to be honest not much else in the market even came close to ticking all the boxes. Set up is so easy and the two zones are perfect for putting the kids to sleep at night, just pull the door across and it is like they are in a separate bedroom. The storage is unbelievable and the slide out lounge is an excellent feature, we can all sit around the table comfortably.

Naturally I was nervous about towing it considering no previous experience, but I have to say it has been a dream on the road.

We added quite a few extras, at this stage we don't plan on free camping unless its an emergency so did not add the extra battery or grey water tank like yourself and just kept with the standard solar unit. The solar works well at home and keeps the battery state in good condition so no need to plug the caravan into mains unless we are cooling the fridge ready for a trip.

We did upgrade to an Ibis AC unit as this came with a remote control to operate it making things easier (we were told the original unit was a manual operation and just thought about getting in and out of bed to turn it on and off). We had two picnic tables on the outside next to each other for more side space which has come in really handy. We also had the outside entertainment package so the kids are not fighting over what is on, also handy when the little one is asleep inside and the girls still want to watch something.

We had the lounge convertor added in case we have extra guests away with us, this is also good for movie nights when they all lay on the bed together and fall asleep in front of the Tv.

We did not go for fixed bunks as we wanted to give the twins some privacy from their little sisters and the dinette table is a perfect area for them, power points and lights are in the wall so they can have their games on charge or read their books in their zone.

I have to say the lighting options are excellent in the van, changing from blue led or under cabinet strip lights can really change the mood in the van, takes a while to learn all the buttons but we are getting there.

The shower pressure is better then I thought it would be and perfect for the kids before bed time.

Sorry for rambling on, I could go on all day about this model, I also understand that we are new to the whole thing and my experience is limited and my view biased, but as a family we are sooo excited about our future trips away and the memories we are going to create. It has bought us all closer together as a family unit as we can share this hobby and plan things as a family.

Again congratulations on the new van I am sure you will just as thrilled with it as we are.

Warren,

Congrats on your new van, from my experience. I think for your size family you have made a good choice in van. I have read most people will have a number of vans over the years as the family changes and working out what you want.

Our first 16” was really to small and after going through a couple of caravan shows, only the 20ft expanda was our fit. 99% of all other family vans are the same layout with a small dinette, but we want to all fit around the table, and with guests.

Have a stone stomper lined up, but until I can get measurements, cant order it, is yours a extended drawer bar ? Where abouts in Sydney are you ? if I can ask ? But we are looking forward to everything about the van, and yes just waiting as then we do a 6 weeks trip to WA at XMAS.

Afternoon Swerve,

What a beautiful day in Sydney hey!

Originally I was trying to keep costs down and look for a smaller van, being our first time and all that, did not want to run the risk of it not being used and have to sell up and lose money. However, after a few months online working my way through the spider web of potential vans and settling on a 17ft Expanda, the wife basically said that if we are going to this then lets do it properly and make sure we have everything we want when we go away. I took her to the caravan expo at Rose Hill this year and we both fell in love with the 20.64-1. The dinette was one of the major selling points for the same reason as yours, along with the way it makes the van feel even bigger. The other major difference was the en suite set up, it just gives the van a more homely feel and is much more practical than most of the other Expandas.

With no more additions to the family we have had it set up with accessories with a view of growing into the van over the next 10 years, there really should not be a reason to change from this one. Even then when we factored in the depreciation it really is an investment, unlike buying cars (which I have plenty of experience in).

I did not extend the drawbar, even though I done months of research reading through forums it didn't seem too relevant at the time. From my understanding it makes the reversing easier and also allows for extra storage on the front. Now I have the taken the van out the reversing was fine but I admit I would like to have an extra box on the front for tools etc. I thought I would have enough storage with the front boot, that is until I picked up the bed end storm covers and the full annex, accompanied with the extended captains quarters and front porch, anti flap kit and poles, outdoor shower tent, damn I wish I knew what was coming with trying to store all that stuff. I am looking at putting a mesh cage under the rear of the van though to help with some stuff, plenty of ground clearance so might work!

Being first timers I had to research and buy EVERYTHING, I had a huge list of things and can not believe how much there is to consider when basically setting up for a family of 6, camp chairs, bedding, cutlery, matching towels for the colour scheme (the wife insisted), the list goes on. I have to admit though I enjoyed every minute of it, shopping on line between stores and getting them when the sales were on, reading the posts from the experienced guys really helped as well.

The stone stomper, is that a guard across the front of the Van? that would be a wise investment as it looks like you get to do more travelling around this huge country than I will for the moment and will be gliding along the occasional dirt road.

I live in Luddenham near where the new airport will be built, how about yourself?

The only issues I have come across so far are:

1. On the strap that is used to keep the en suite door closed, the press stud has broken, easy fix though. This is something I highlighted tot he missus as a potential problem with the kids just yanking at it.

2. The other issue is the DVD player on the TV stopped working on our first trip away. Warranty claim when I get the chance to take it in. (lucky I had my laptop which has Foxtel go on it for the kids evening movie time)

3. Being so high off the ground a step is need for the kids and also to stop someone rolling their ankle, I have looked at the double pull out step but not sure yet, time will tell.

6 week trip at xmas sounds great, I have to settle for a couple of weeks to Queensland and back, never the less I cant wait for the trip. What route are you taking to WA, are you going around the top or across the middle? I feeling Jealous!

Hey bigcol,

I know I was really nervous with the whole towing thing but then thought if others can do it why cant I? took a while to convince myself though!!

I use a Grand Cherokee to tow, fortunately for me I am in the motor industry and am able to take advantage of that by using it. It was a choice of the Jeep, Colorado or the Navara. I went with the Jeep as it received excellent reviews for towing and will also be the vehicle I drive daily.

I am new to the site so when I figure out how to start a thread I will, I only know how to reply at this stage, any tips would be appreciated.

Sorry @Swerve for hijacking, I will figure out how to use this site ASAP, happy for pointers in the right direction. Feeling guilty now :(

Hi Swerve if it's not too late it may be worth looking at upgrading the aircon unit. After having a number of jayco s we found the heating on the standard unit was pretty poor.

Its coming with a Coleman Mach 9 LP. The stats show 3.3kw heating and 3.3kw cooling. From the figures it all looks ok. Our last 2013 Jayco had a Dometic Truma which had a I think 2.6kw Cooling and 2.4kw Heating. From the figures this seems ok. We mainly use it for cooling and use a Fan heater for heating, so should be fine.

Called the dealer last week and van should be completed late Oct, shipped up and ready 1st or 2nd week in Nov. To think its about 3 weeks away, it starting to feel very soon.

I need to rip up some garden to make room for it at home, but also get some car repairs done before it turns up. Plus getting mods planned before it arrives, toolboxes, relocate spare and so on.

Getting closer, getting excited

Steering box is leaking and also pulling front diff/housing out, suspect I have a small bend in it from 4WDriving, so getting a diff specialist to check it over, add a e locker, will change all front bushes in the process, ready for my 10k xmas drive

Well while the diff is torn down for this investigation, it makes sense to chuck one in, don't really need one, however just makes sense to do it.

Wife asked me if I was to change tow/4WD's what would I want, problem is nothing out there interests me, yes the TB48 is thirsty, but is reliable, goes quick, plus if I did change the depreciation is way worse then my fuel bill. So the TB48 stays along with some added extras, if I can ever get a cheapish turbo bolt on, you never know.

if you go the Turbo bolt on - you are better off with dedicated Gas - same (or better) performance with less $$$$ for fuel..........
not good for long distance touring though

I nearly brought a TB48, but found my TD42 instead
still wonder sometimes if the 4.8 would have been better, but SWMBO's cruiser is a 4.7V8

how did your 16' go behind it.....?

I also have a 21ft boat with a 350 MAG MPI which weighs 2.5t. This is towed long distance and you can feel it but can do the speed limit and overtake with it on easily. Makes my Syd - Bris trips to the in laws easy over Xmas. The 16 footer could barely be felt at 1600kg so the large panda isn't a issue. We hired a Britz panda (20 ft full height) years ago and did a great ocean road run 3500km over 5 days . Fuel stayed the same around 25 lph once I eased up on the gas.

We normally drive the wife's cars so the TB48 only does around 10k per year, towing or space needed trips. Had a ZD 30 before this and loved it, but got paranoid about a bang.

Staying away from LPG as it stuffs heads up, she's at 80k now since buying it new in 2010. So fuel isn't really a issue in the larger scheme of things .

depends on if I win lotto I suppose..........................
