Here it is still wrapped in plastic last weekend, took delivery today. So exciting. Most expensive car I've ever bought, but got a great deal with the "Main Event" sale that is now on. A few changes for the 2014 model for the trainspotters out there - no "Land Rover" signage on the bonnet or tail, new front grill and lights, more blacked out treatment, indicators in the mirrors, and a few other things. Only up to 16 klms so far but loving it!

would have loved to have waited for a D5, but about 2 years away unfortunately. Figured the current one is tried and true ...
We brought a second hand D3 just after the D4 came out probably upgrade to second hand D4 once a D5 comes out. Less then 100k on our clock so a bit of life left. Have a V6 Petrol so wait to see how much towing hurts us :)

They are a great car to drive.. can easily sit 7 adults.. or 3 Adults and 4 kids which we do often if we bring a friend.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I had a good look at this forum as I pondered Territories, Jeeps, BT50/Ranger/Amaroks but in the end Dingo's classiness won me over!

Hey Dingo - options ended up being 7 seats/leather, stereo upgrade, sunrooves (3!), the "tech pack" (sat nav/rev camera/front park assist/4wd info display etc), and xenons with LED signature. Had to be delivered before Feb to get the sale price - .... wish I'd been able to get the active E-diff but there were only 2 available for the sale and neither had the almond interior (personal thing, I prefer light interiors).

Accessories - first thing is brake controller of course (think I'll stick with my HR one), and roof rails/bars (ebay LR copies for about $450 - any thoughts?). Thinking about a bull bar (LR one?) - planning a lap of Oz in 2015, so will want one for that, and probably change the tyres then (and wheels to 18"?).

Quoted $1600 to fit a brake controller by the dealer! Is it really that hard in a Disco? They want to fit a Redarc but I'm happy with my Hayman Rheese guardian. Any thoughts/experiences?

WHAT?????
The unit is $150, so thats what, 9.5 hrs to install? All the wiring is behind the cover plate on the wall on the right hand side of the drivers foot.
I paid half that from Melb LR to do, including the unit.

check out this and do it yourself even.... ('Sniegy' is the Melb LR service tech)

Otherwise talk to an auto sparky!

There is also a new HR unit which takes the same place as the redarc and thus very neatly positioned, but with a progressive control on it (determines rate of brake application, eather then the tendancy to snap on fully at whatever level is set on - but still not Proportional in the sence of a good P3)

We just paid around $400 to fit an IQ to the D3 a few weeks ago
I eventually talked the wife to go somewhere not LR after our air suspension went and I got it almost half the price done at a LR specialist. Land Rover rang me to ask why I canceled I said cost he said a few people have not been happy and added some parts he could get cheaper from uk eBay then they got locally so he understands.

Thinking about a bull bar (LR one?) - planning a lap of Oz in 2015, so will want one for that, and probably change the tyres then (and wheels to 18"?).

With the roof rails, there has been talk of some of the ebay ones being a problem with the glass roofs - apparantly the OEM ones have a small bend in them, where as the china ones don't. They then put pressure on the glass. Some are now marked as "not for glass roof models". Not sure if the British ones are the same. My OEM 3/4 length ones were about $650.
Try LRPARTS.COM instead and ship from England - $AU340 plus shipping

Bullbars -
Have you seen a genuine LR bar yet? I don't think they're as good as a steel bar. They're very bulky and sit fairly close to the body so I question whether they'd still transfer any impact in the car still, whereas an ARB or OL etc sit further off and offer better protection. Plus they're hugely expensive.
ARB - $2500 ish fitted, Australian made, solid well proven, colour codes available, but not good with the forward camera and sensors, 15mm gap between top of bar and underside of headlights (fit a rubber strip to hide)
Opp Lock - about same price, Thai made, colour codes, made with cutouts for cameras and sensors, same gap
ECB - $?, black, silver, grey or polished, alloy, holes for sensors but not sure about cameras

If going to 18", but a larger tyre size apparently the larger tyre rubs on the ARB bar where the windscreen washer bottle is, whereas the OL one doesn't.

For the 18" rims talk to Gordon at GOE Australia in WA. (also for bash plates, suspension upgrades/rods, driver training/manuals)
http://www.greenovalexperience.com/
Rims are around the $500ea mark, plus probably a few hundred more for shipping cost. But the options for tyres are better.

Also talk to Tim at Traxide for a dual battery kit - made to suit a D4 perfectly.
http://www.traxide.com.au/complete-diy-dual-battery/land-rover-dbs-kits/discovery-4-dbs-kits/

(when I saw talk to them, do just that - they are very helpful and willing to actually talk and explain stuff as necessary)

and if not already with the Freelander, get on AULRO.com (of which Tim, Gordon and the previous referred to Sneigy are regular contributors since they are also LR drivers and appreciators)

Dingo you're a legend - what a mine of information! Thanks Dave too about the controller. Confirms my view to find someone else to do it - LR reckons its a full day job but i can't see why. Surely someone would be happy to get $500-$600 for the job. Jayco won't touch it - said its too technical.

I read bad things about Redarc on Aulro so will steer clear, but am definitely interested in the HR one that's similar thanks Dingo.

The roof rack at LRparts link you mention says they are " in the genuine Land Rover style" which sounds like they might be the same as the ebay ones to me? Again the LR dealer quoted me over $2000 to supply and fit the full length ones which seems like highway robbery. Said maybe $1800 because I was a new purchaser .... groan. I want to put kayaks on in the short term, and a tinny or inflatable longer term.

I have seen the genuine LR bullbar for $1800 online but yeah, I wonder about alloy and whether it will just bend the bar and the car. They all look ugly according to the missus, but a good one will do a job. Will probably wait til next year for the bullbar and tyres closer to The Big Trip.

If anyone knows where i can get the controller fitted in Canberra region let me know! THanks for all the really great advice, what a great forum

I have the redarc on mine and initially really disliked after having come a proportional controller. While I still don't think it is as good as a proportional one still, I've come to understand how to use it to its best performance. It does need adjusting while traveling at different speeds (higher setting for highway, lower for slower). I wouldn't now replace it for a proportional unit sitting on the dash as originally considered. (But if RedArc or HR came up with one as discrete as this one i'd consider it again for best of both worlds.)

LRParts - yes sorry misread that, thought they were OEM too. (most OEM parts still cheaper to buy from UK inc shipping that from the dealers)

Congrats on the purchase, my parents took delivery of thier landy late llast year. After being a crusier man for so long, he drove the 200 then the rover and just loved it. He had a redarc installed by ARB and from memory it was 8 or 9 hundred but that was also running an anderson plug to the towbar. He had a teko in the cruiser and I asked him how he liked the redarc and he reckons its great and easy to use and prefered it.

G'day Albo, Congrats on the Disco, they are a pleasure to drive. I whacked some Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on my 19" rims before we went away for a 1/2 lap. I'm not sure how serious a 4W Driver you are, but I went over some fairly tricky 4WD tracks and sand and never had an issue. The tyres were also very quiet on the bitumen. Just my 2 bob's worth
