We have a 2013 20.63-1 OB Expanda that we recently bought to replace our last Expanda that some fool wrote off. Anyway, long story. To get to the point, we have a provision for a washing machine in the rear of the van located in the ensuite. We also have a sphere 2.5kg washing machine we want to put in there. The problem we have is that the external shower is located in the same cavity. I'm aware that I will have to sacrifice the external shower to fit the washing machine in there. We really are sick of carrying the machine in the rear of the cruiser.
I guess the questions I need answered are -
  • Do I need to waterproof the internal of the provision?
  • Has anyone added a washing machine post purchase that can offer any words of wisdom?
  • Can I add a drain straight to the S bend in the sink or should I go through the floor to the waste?
  • Has anyone had any bad experiences with machines in their vans?
Any help on these questions regardless of how minor the details is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

We ahve a factory washing machine in our new Starcraft which we've only used once as a test. Therefore, I dontknow much. However, I can tell you that Jayco use a separate waste pipe for the machine, giving us a total of 3 outlets under the van. It is a fairly wide diameter pipe. I suspect this is the case to handle the amount of flow? I wonder if hooking up to the existing waste will cause restricted flow or cause waste water to come out of the shower or sink drains.

Re the waterproofing. I didn't notice any extra waterproofing, but I can have a better look for you in daylight if you need.

Good luck and let us know how you go

Mate that would be fantastic. Photos would be great too if possible ( time permitting for you of course ). I had my suspicions that a separate waste would probably be needed as these little washing machines tend to need the flow to stop them from continuously syphoning. We have had 2 x lemair 2.2kg machines and I'd have to say they were painful until I worked out just to drain into a large storage bucket with a drain barb screwed into the side of it that ran out into a sullage hose. This worked a treat and never had problems after that. The storage box also stowed our pipes so it was dual purpose.

Ours uses a 40mm seperate drain pipe .
Looking at ours it hasn't got any extra water proofing in the area and uses a valve similar to the one at home .
I'd have to check but I think it only has cold water connected but ours is a front loader so may be different

Photo would be good if you have one. I have an 18 with a factory installed washing machine. No water proofing, only cold water connected. 40mm waste.
So do you have that bench top that folds?
I am tipping the way they have run your shower, space is lost because of the way they have run the hot and cold pipes. You may be able to save some space. You may be able to change the piping to give you some space.
Anyway, post some photos.

Ours is a similar install except it is under the TV cabinet. That's where they used to put them. At first I thought it was a stupid spot, but actually works for us.
