The maximum tow ball weight is indicated on the compliance plate, but to calculate it based on your current load follow this link that explains how to do it with bathroom scales.

Weigh it!!
Seriously there is one easy method, use 2 sets of bathroom scales with a piece of wood accross them and place the jockey wheel in the middle, now from memory you either double the reading of halve it, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to confirm shortly
