How far north can you comfortably take a van. I thinking about going up maybe next year, and want to give the Behemoth a bit of a breather from the bashing it got
off road or not to cape york ???????

Realistically the road is bituminised to Laura, if you don't want to take the van off road I'd leave it there
Me too......safe to drive there. Or maybe Endeavour Falls....there's a nice quiet caravan park there which wasn't too busy when we were there a few weeks ago but I'm not sure if they store vans. I'd be surprised if they don't as most in the area from cairns north seem to do that.
You'll need to tent or swag it from there....most realistic travellers seem to be allocating up to ten days to get up and back.

Road turned to rubbish pretty soon after you get on the dirt
We dropped ours at Mt Carbine as they store it for free, we were quoted up to $16 per day. 
As @crackacoldie says, the roads are pretty rough in patches, mostly good but where it's bad, it's crap. It is planned to have the road sealed to Weipa by 2019 so a lot of work is being done and hold ups are frequent.

Thanks guys for all the discussion, the tip is now of our list unless we can get the timing right with the end of the wet. (Less idiotd!).
