Not many people like the idea of going out alone to the vast stretches far from civilization and spend time with your self / family and mother nature. A typical camping holiday is usually limited to some free camping sites and caravan parks where you are one in a crowd of holidayer's and campers. However, there are a few of us who want to go ‘off the beaten track’ and venture out to the outback in this vast land.

The harsh roads and conditions away from camping sites and towns are not suitable for a typical caravan and car. You have to go for a well designed off road caravan, and further bolster it with reinforcements. Off road caravans give you the freedom to go where the other caravans cannot, and provide you the choice of extended stays away from the hustle and bustle of society.

As off road caravans are specially designed for extended stays away from everything, they should be fitted out with additional features like and extra water tank, communications system 2 way radio, solar panels for renewable energy, bigger batteries (as well as an extra set if you are gone for extended periods) and servicing equipment, so that you can fix general mechanical problems that might arise on the way. Off road caravans are built to rough it out and while there is an ongoing debate about the quality of todays caravans to get right of the track in most cases they are more than suitable as long as you know the vans limits and the cars.

Before embarking on your trip you should ensure you check several critical points of your caravan. These are the tires, the brakes, suspension (consider the various options such as tandem, single, standard, etc.), load sharing when packing, the weight distribution hitch set-up, the coupling to the tow vehicle, etc.

Remember these basic things can seem simple but its always best to measure twice and cut once.

Happy trails!
