Normal batteries should work, maybe try removing batteries and turning power to AC off at main switch, give it a minute or so then reboot everything and see how you go, if not then remote probably stuffed.

little tip for remotes not working, after you try new batteries.
place the remote - transmitter end in front of your mobile phone camera very close. Push the buttons on your remote and if working you should see some flashes. if so remote working on the buttons you pressed. Look at device instead.

if not open remote remove circuit board. You should see where the rubber buttons touch the circuit board. Usually a squiggle of circuit board tracks. Using a pencil eraser rub the area which will remove corrosion or gunk. You can also gently rub the rubber button. Assemble and retry. Often this is all that's needed to fix a remote.
