Hi Guys,

Just a quick one to see what everyone thinks about a current model Pajero towing a 18.58-2 outback.

I know the tow ball limits etc for the Pajero.

On the Jayco website the18.58-2 Outback has 185 ball weight with a 2210 tare weight.

Is this ok to tow with a pajero? I am assuming that as long as I don't load it over 2500kgs with that ball weight then all should be ok?

Any advice?

Brad

I'm a huge fan of the Pajero (owned an NS for five years) but on those figures I'd be careful.

Loaded with water, gas, any accessories and gear you are more than likely to exceed 2500kg ATM and definitely a higher ball weight. This means you won't be legal with the latest Pajero (180kgball weight over 2500kgATM). I also would be careful relying on the Jayco published figures - there are many stories here of the actual built weights being over the published weights.

It's a shame they don't specify a sliding scale of progressively decreasing ball weight as you approach 3000KgATM - but that's why we had to sell and in our case bought the Jeep.

I'd be wary....the posted weights on the web site can be very misleading, depending on extras added.

As said, have a really close look at the sliding scale effect on GVM of different ball weights.

Pajero can pull it fine
I have a NW and a 18-57-5 2012 Model (please note this has the normal suspension which is a lot lighter, but it is also a full height van)

I recently took it over the weighbridge and got the following results

Caravan and Car 4840 KG (max for the Pajero is 6030) but this is at 180 tow ball weight

Car Weight (full tank)and me in it (im 80kg) 2460 (max 3050) 590 kg left to put in MINUS tow ball weight

Hitch Weight 220kg

Van Weight (Tare 2119) actual 2380kg (water, gas, Webber, tools) ATM 2594

So the answer to you question would be yes but as long as they get the weights right, there was someone on here not long ago saying that the actual weight was way heavier than the plate weight.

My dealer told me if your tow vehicle cannot legally tow the van you buy then they won't let you take it away when you pick it up. Here are the standard stats from the website. Your ATM on the plate would be over 2500 on pickup based on this. Add 475 (ensuite van allowance) to 2210 and you will have a 2685 ATM plus the weight of any factory assessories you have added. We have just bought a starcraft 17.58.3 which is a lighter van but I am still worried we'll go over our Prado towing capacity. Will only know once it arrives. Maybe a few modifications to your towing vehicle might fix this problem. Goodluck getting the van you want. It's a real problem for us with lower towing capacity cars.

Be real careful. I have been down that path and after waiting 4 months. On day of pick up found the tow ball weight was not 170Kg as per Jayco brochure, but was 270Kg. Luckily we had an email stating the weights and tow ball weight from Jayco. Deposit refunded and we moved on.
In summary do not believe any weight on a Jayco brochure especially tow ball weight. Always check the compliance plate at pick up, luckily we did.

There is a long thread on this unfortunate experience on this forum and of particular interest is the post we made on the 24th of Dec 2014.

I'm afraid you would be just too close to the limit and very likely exceed the capacity unknowingly. There are better alternates around that would tow your van without the capacity worries.

We have a similar van and we tow with 2010 Pajero. You can put heavy duty springs in Pajero will help with weight.
