Hi....a question which I seem to remember has been covered / answered somewhere. ..but I cant find it.

I need to find an easy way to attach sail track to the bed end lid.

If i remember correctly, sikaflex or one of the variants should work...I want avoid drilling holes !

Also, can anyone suggest where i can get some plastic sail track, rather than aluminium?

Thanks. I'll try that.

It's not a jayco so the fitting will be different. As a matter of interest for those looking at the jayco screens and storm covers...both of which we had and sold with our previous van....the price quoted for supply and fitting by Golf ...privacy screens only ....is around $1000 per end so the jayco prices are good in comparison. Volume counts.

I don't think they've heard of storm covers ...they'd probably do them for $2k per end.

So we're not paying a small ridiculous fortune for them but making our own.

and the Golf needs the storm covers whereas our jayco ones were never used. We've been wet for the last week! And have done the usual tricks of avoiding wicking, seasoning etc and resorted to temporary tarps.

I guess the east coast low we've been in for the last ten days could be defined as ' market research '.

We now know we need them.

Yep...but they do them for the Jayco models which is a far bigger market.

There are design differences in the non Jayco lids so that's presumably why they quote such high prices....the market is smaller, the production far less cost effective and they can't see a market for these ...good old economies of scale.

Meanwhile, we're working on our template. Maybe we'll make a fortune designing generic models.

Don't hold your breath!

alternately, if you could get your hands on a Jayco one, and go to your local Canvas man / upholsterer and get them to make one for you from the template

I paid $200 a couple of years ago for a mob to make some for me, in the end, I was able to get the Jayco ones, and fitted them

worth a shot?

Not after all the effort I've put into working out how to do it!

and my Scottish blood doesn't help.

so far:
  • I took photos of both the storm covers and the privacy screens from our expanda and how they were fitted.
  • I've bought the Kedor sail tape
  • I've bought the press studs
  • I've got old tarps ready to cut down for testing the template
  • We've tried a few temporary solutions while away to check for the angle he rain hits and what really needs most protection...back or sides
  • Also trying different attachment methods
So I've just about sussed it out, I think.

All I need now is the recommended sikaflex spec for the attachment of plastic sail track...and the sail track, of course.

I don't mind paying for value but it's too expensive getting the Jayco ones, adding or cutting them and then stuffing around with the fixing method.
Cost for that would be around the $200 mark ...maybe more..and I'd still have to fluff around or get a professional fluffer!

Thank @bigcol but you can now feel totally rejected.

I used sikaflex 291 to do mine, but I also have pop rivets, I didnt just rely on the sikaflex.

although I know the sikaflex is greatest bit of gear around, I too would not trust just that to support the weight of the BEF

*Try posting a bit more so your post isn't boring* for the pop rivets - if you can.................

T'anks for the replies.

Unfortunately, pop rivets don't appear to be an option as the lid on the Golf is a different design around the seal area. The track needs to be attached to the flat lid area behind the seals ...anywhere else and the lids probably won't close. (it has a deep moulded well all around the lid to take water out, with drainage holes)

so, we'll give the sika a try and, if it fails, we'll get wet. Again.

If we keep the storm protection stuff as light as possible...thinking cut down tarp at this stage...it might have a better chance of holding. It doesn't need to be pretty, just functional.

The bed end flies shouldn't be too much of a problem...just the usual press studs and clips around sides.

I'll also have a serious chat to a canvas guy when we get home.

and I'll try to add a photo if we get it sorted.
