Hi All
Great site, heaps of info. After checking out some vans on the weekend we (wife and two girls, 4 and 2) decided we will get an Expanda.
Either the 16.49.4 or 17.59.1.
The extras we thought are
2nd gas tank
coast to coast
2nd water tank
Exteral shower with hot water system
Tv aerial
The 16 we can get for $45k and the 17 for $48.5k. Are they good prices? and should we get any othet add ons?
Thanks for the tips, we are upgradi g from a camper trailer

:welcome:

I'd recommend you do loads of reading, and you're probably doing that, and ask loads of question about items you're not sure about.....make a list and have some idea of quoted price on all items included.

Then negotiate! You should have a leeway of up to $2k.

If you're not happy with their lowest price, ring around then go back to them with the price you may have from another dealer.

and, as @mfexpanda said, look carefully at the extended draw bar....more space to use the draw bar for boxes bikes etc and better for reversing....and ESC....worth its weight in gold. Safety.

But start with a fairly clear idea of what sort of camping you want to do and therefore what is most important.

eg....mainly caravan parks...no real need for solar, extra water or gas
........free camping....you must have solar, extra tanks...water and gas...good battery capacity 12v Chargers and sockets etc.

Have fun!

welcome to the forum @MarkAW

as @Dobbie said, lots and lots of reading before you commit your hard earned coin

get a clear idea of what sort of travelling you are wanting to do, then sort out "Must Have's" and "would be nice to have's"
everything that you get fitted at manufacture is recorded on your Tare compliance plate
everything that you add after manufacture comes off your allowable payload

so once you have got a clear idea, as said, do the ring around / visit yards, and try to find the best price with all the must haves, and most of the would be nice's

dont be afraid to look at other states, some Jayco dealers are easier than others to deal with, so State/ Town loyalty is not always the best

what sort of vehicle will be pulling your new pride and joy.......?
you have to make sure you are not over loading that with what you will be towing

Welcome to the forum @MarkAW

I think most of the recommendations I would give have already been said above.
Prices look fair to me for the 17.56.1 but is that with the options you listed? And are they prices for an Outback?
We paid just under $50K in 2014 for a 17.56.2 Outback. But being in WA (aka Wait Awhile) that price included dealer delivery which has since been removed and prices are supposedly now comparable with other states!

As @Dobbie and @bigcol mentioned..... Have a good perusal through the site as there is a shedload of info on here and if you don't find an answer to any other queries just ask away and one of us on here will do our best to reply with hopefully a positive answer!

I think when you get the hot water the second tank is part of the package . Extended draw bar is a must
plus the extra gas bottle comes with the HWS as well I think

Hi @MarkAW, and welcome to the forum and congrats on the upgrade. Tourer or Outback??

Its important you either include a TV swing arm or at least the wall blocking so you have somewhere to mount the TV. As ridiculous as it sounds its not standard and if you dont order the blocking, it wont be there and you cant mount the TV.

An outdoor drop down table is great, as is an awning side TV point for watching the footy whilst your cooking the BBQ; and my son loves watching movies outside.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Prices i mentioned are for the outback versions with the extras mentioned.
How much longer is the extended draw bar?
I thought about going to dealers further away but thought that could be an issue with warranties?
We have a 2015 NX Pajero so towing shouldnt be an issue. Will be putting a lift kit on and heavier springs with the accessiors already on the car, bullbar, winch, etc

Mark I would also suggest the Starcraft 17-58-3 for a family of 4 it is a great setup and we got the OB with lots of extras for 45K and no canvas ends and has shower and dunny just not as spacious as the 17 expanda but if your outside a lot then who cares.

300mm

Warranty can be done at any dealer or Warranty Agent..... Jayco pays for the repairs so doesn't matter where the van is taken.

Also are the storm covers or privacy screens required or nice to have? Or just a pain to set up?
Storm covers are good when the weather starts to turn bad..... Also good in hotter weather to help insulate the van. Privacy screens are good for short stays and when the weather is being kind to you ;) Both are easy to fit and should take no longer than 2 - 3 minutes each end.

Yeah we had a look at the Starcraft and the wife thought it was a little cramped and like the extra space of the Expanda. Toilet and shower inside she won't have a bar of. Thanks for all suggestions everyone.
Pretty much impossible to get prices over the phone, looks like we got to do some leg work

We bit the bullet and ordered a 16.49.4 OB. Ended up paying less than the advertised website price with a bunch of extras including hot water system and external shower, 2nd gas and water tank, coast to coast, ESC, extended draw bar, TV and TV bracket, antenna and radio and anderson plug on the draw bar.

Next step is changing the tow plug on the Pajero from the flat 7 pin to 12 pin. Or is it simpler just getting an adapter?

Hi @MarkAW,
What you do with regards the plug will depend on:
1: whether you want the Pajero to power your fridge while you are towing or not.
2: whether you want to power the fridge using a) two of the five heavy duty 35A pins on the 12 pin plug or b) separately via an Anderson plug.

When we bought our van, the dealer supplied the 12 pin plug and Jayco wiring diagram when we signed the contract.

cheers
Mike

Yep. Change the plug.

Adaptor is just a temporary fix for short trips from big green shed to home, not for longer term travelling.

Well done with biting the bullet...it only hurts at first, then becomes slightly more palatable.
