Caravan safety inspections - NSW

Just received the rego papers for the van. Being over 5 years old, over 2 tonne and with a breakaway system, it requires an inspection. From the NSW RMS website:

Generally, light vehicles more than five years old require a safety check (previously called a pink slip) before you can renew the registration. Light vehicles include:
  • Trailers and caravans with an aggregate trailer mass of 4.5 tonnes or less (including those fitted with breakaway brakes, but not including those fitted with air or vacuum (breakaway) braking systems).
So went to the local light vehicle inspection station and inquired if he could do the check. Seems legally he now can but part of the testing requirement is to park the van on a hill, uncouple the tug, activate the breaksafe system and monitor for 25 minutes. He hasn't actually done this type of inspection since the change to the requirements - needs to find a suitable hill and then spend time away from the workshop - all for $40 or whatever the going rate is.

Any NSW readers had a recent experience with getting an inspection on their van (over 2 tonne)? Calling my local Jayco service centre is on my options list as well as calling local heavy vehicle inspection stations.

What place in their right mind would comply with that ???? That test is fraught with danger especially when the breaksafe is not designed as a parking break, I would assume wheel chocks in place.........................sounds dumb, find someone in Vic and save about $600.

Keep away from Heavy Vehicle Inspection Stations at all times....they wouldn't test it anyway.

I just had my boat/ trailer re-rego'ed last week. Total mass 2400kg with Electric Hydraulic brakes, break away system and none of that stuff.

Check all indicators
Check break away chains, 1 if under 2500, 2 over 2500
Pull breakaway switch, brakes worked (you can hear it as elec/ Hyd)
I have upgrade mine with the new battery required, which shows the battery status.

Does the inspection include checking screws with a left handed screwdriver?

When we went to register our van, in NSW (purchased in VIC), local panel beater did the inspection as he was authorised heavy vehicle inspector, after doing all required measurements and light checks compliance plate etc. he got me to drive forward slowly while he pulled the break-away pin out, locked the van up quick smart, job done.

Got the van rego check done today. Went to a truck repair place (heavy vehicle inspector) recommended by, and across the road, from a local caravan repair company. Checks done were very similar to those described by @Bushman. Haven't heard back from the local mechanic that I mentioned in my original post; me thinks he just didn't want to do the job. Reread my original post and it sounded very much like chicken little squawking that the sky is falling.... I think @achjimmy was spot on. Anyway, all is good.

Good news, I thought you meant a Heavy Vehicle Inspection Station earlier ....so how much they sting for rego.

Hey @Drover. No, it was a light vehicle inspector 'cos that was where I got my previous van's inspection done (no breaksafe system on that one). Cost was $48 or $49; probably a bit more because he had to pull the pin :)

If I'd been better organised, I would have also taken the van to a local public weigh bridge and had it weighed for free. Haven't done it since I've had it. Instead, I made the phone call after I got home and had reversed the van up the laneway behind my house. Confirmed I still suck at reversing the van over any longer distance :(

Hi @Drover, rego is $471 this year; then insurance on top of that. I don't like the thought of getting older but in NSW, reaching 65 does have a few benefits (at the moment). A sore point at home but my wife will reach that age before. I occasionally point that fact out when she is giving me a hard time. Doesn't help the situation but makes me feel better ;)

I've forgotten how old I am now, it's irrelevant.............Mrs D was a cradle snatcher also, a fact I point out in my foolish moments......................................I can't get over the cost to register a van in NSW, it's bad enough in QLD at $195 and no sticker either.

I just renewed my rego (NSW) and it was $671. Luckily still less that 5 years old so no inspection yet required.

My son just rego'd his 100 series, $1300 for rego and green slip.

Rego in this state is an absolute joke.

Old post ,however took the 2015 17.58 JOB poptop in for pink slip this morning.Five minute walk around checked lights
$50.00 .Asked the guy what about the brakes,he asked they are working arnt they? He was more worried about the std coiled breakaway lead which he said was too long ,should be shorter than the chains so if cv comes off the ball ,brakes will be activated.! He said will fail me next time if not shortened.Absolute joke.

Hey @BJM if that was my regular mechanic I would be changing very quickly. Young, local fellow I use for tug and van very thorough.
Quite happy to pay.
Caravan Rego in VIC $60-40 this year, no inspection for trailers cars or caravans required. Before moving here consider life under chairman Dan, it's a bit wearing!
