Heading up to the Gold Coast to do the theme parks for the first two weeks of October. Have booked to stay at Broadwater Park.

However looks like I might be able to get up there a couple of days earlier, but due to school holidays most places are either booked out or want a minimum stay period. Looks like I might have to do some 'free camping' on the way up and when I arrive.

I have checked with the theme parks and there is no issue with parking my van in their car parks during the day whilst I attend the park. Just finding somewhere overnight to lay up is going to be fun. Have been studying Google Maps for some potential spots.

I think if I avoid stopping in the vicinity of caravan parks, I shouldn't have an issue. When I was a kid, my dad used to do the same, however he would be a bit cheeky and park opposite caravan parks, we'd often got the move along by the caravan park owners.

So contrary to the title of this thread, part of my trip will not be planned as such.;)

@BigSkiddy , if I was home you could overnight at our place (10 minutes from the theme parks) but we will still be coming home from Wilpena/ Flinders but there is a place called Mango Flats on the Nerang Beaudesert Rd just past Mt Nathan. It is just before the army base starts and there is nothing there but I have seen people camp there. If you are interested The Latitude is 27°59'27.10"S and Longitude is 153°14'16.66"E from google earth. I can supply a bit more info if you are interested. You could also camp at the Canungra showground or Sharp Park at Canungra, both of these places are less than half an hour from Movieworld and are reasonably cheap with limited facilities.

PM me if I can provide any more info.

Then will get back into the van, camping indulgence next year.

I might have the shed cleaned out by the time we make a final decision.

Hope you all have great fun and safe travels!

so where abouts are you going?
so we can suggest other things as well..........................

Well I’m trying to keep the trip very flexible as I normally plan to much as most my touring has been 4WD with the boys, where I can do all day driving holidays. So this is a short trip LOL.

I will drive solo from Syd – Perth in 4 days, wife, 5 year old and 3 month old infant will fly in. This will save the best part of a week trying to drive there with them, will also get some driving out of my system.

This plan is a two part loop of WA, no higher then Port Headland. In 18 months I will do the centre with family and northern WA (Tanami Track, Gibb river road, Broome etc). So for this trip aiming on free camping where possible, now we have a van with shower/ toilet. Will get paid sites every 2-3 days when available/ possible etc.

After driving to Perth Solo, will recover 2 days in Perth, can always fly in other times and do Rotnest etc, so really just a look see in Perth, then head North along the coast up to Port Headland. Stop anything of interest, but aim for 7-9 days heading north. From Port Headland aim South, again take in as much as possible, Then down to the south coast, and loop back to Perth.

Then after Perth 2nd stop head East to Sydney.

Basic dates are (Aiming for 200km days)

28th Dec – Wife arrives in Perth

30 Dec – Depart Perth

30th 31st Dec – Geraldton 2 nights

1st 2nd Jan – Canarvon 2 nights

3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th Road to Port Headland

7th, 8th Road to Newman

9th 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th Rd to Perth

14th 15th to Margaret River

16th 17th Albany

18th 19th 20th to Esperance

21st, 22nd Wave Rock, Kalgoorliee

23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, to Broken Hill

29th 30th 31st To Sydney

Again all the above is based on around 200km days, if we have shorter days, we may cut the south loop short, just take it as it comes etc.
